Generic Biologic Drugs

Access to Life-Saving Medicine Act (U.S. Congress)

We have been retained to build and work with a consumer-patient-labor coalition to support legislation in Congress that would provide a "roadmap" for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to allow generic versions of biotech, or biological, drugs to be sold in the U.S. Biologics, which are different from traditional pharmaceutical products because they are produced from living cell cultures rather than chemicals, promise a new generation of life-saving treatments for diseases like cancer, diabetes, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and heart disease.

Yet it is common for these drugs to cost tens of thousands of dollars a year, keeping them out of the reach of many Americans. This legislation could save patients, employers, and the government billions of dollars by allowing generic versions of these drugs on the market, thereby substantially lowering their costs.
