We have been retained to build a consumer-patient-labor coalition to support legislation in Congress that would provide a "roadmap" for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to allow generic versions of biotech, or biological, drugs to be sold in the U.S. Biologics, which are different from traditional pharmaceutical products because they are produced from living cell cultures rather than chemicals, promise a new generation of life-saving treatments for diseases like cancer, diabetes, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and heart disease. Yet it is common for these drugs to cost tens of thousands of dollars a year, keeping them out of the reach of many Americans. This legislation could save patients, employers, and the government billions of dollars by allowing generic versions of these drugs on the market, thereby substantially lowering their costs. We directed a nationwide coalition of hundreds of public interest organizations and state and local government entities in a multi-million dollar legislative campaign to protect investor rights. The campaign prevented the worst aspects of proposed limits on the rights of investors from being enacted by Congress in the 2006 Private Securities Litigation Reform Act (PSLRA). As a result, cheated investors in corporate scandals such as Enron and WorldCom have achieved unprecedented recoveries of billions of dollars.
