Legislative and Other AdvocacyWashington, D.C. Advocacy. Our most senior attorneys have spent their careers – together, over 100 years – in Washington law practices, in government, public interest groups, and in the private sector. We specialize in Washington, D.C. representation as part of litigation. We help lawyers from around the country to monitor legislation, hearings, investigations and regulatory proceedings that may affect their cases. Our unique expertise is widely recognized by our peers. In the seventeen years since our founding, law firms from around the country, from Boston to San Diego and from Seattle to Florida, have called upon our specialized services when their clients and cases needed help in Washington, D.C. Very often, when a powerful company is sued, it turns first to Congress for relief. We specialize in stopping those efforts, and working to protect the interests of injured consumers and investors so that the legal process can appropriately continue. For example, we have represented physicians whose antitrust lawsuit against hospitals was in danger of being crushed by a proposed antitrust exemption … investors and employees of Enron – victims of massive fraud -- during congressional hearings into that failed company … the bondholders swindled by Charles Keating during the Lincoln Savings and Loan scandal. Washington representation is unique. Public opinion, media coverage, political forces and the interplay among branches of government often influence the resolution of our client’s problems. Public Advocacy. Our attorneys have served at the highest levels of government and politics. They are skilled in helping clients craft arguments that will prevail in the court of public opinion. One partner was chief speechwriter for President Bill Clinton and wrote two inaugural addresses and four State of the Union Addresses. Another ran a statewide referendum campaign on legal reform issues in California. Another was executive director of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Partners have written dozens of op-ed articles and books and have appeared hundreds of times on radio and television.
